Nineteen students from John Burroughs School have been named semifinalists in national competitions for merit scholarships sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This represents 20% of the Burroughs senior class, the highest percentage in the state of Missouri and one of the highest in the nation.
“For the seventh consecutive year, Burroughs leads the state with the highest percentage of seniors to be named as semi-finalists,” says head of school Keith Shahan. “We are very proud of this record, but even prouder of the well-rounded nature of all of our students who are as engaged in the arts, athletics and activities as they are in academics. That is our goal.”
Sixteen seniors were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program: Dana Bolger, William Cheng, Kevin Cross, Nick Evens, Clay Grable, Hannah Gu, Alex Guzov, Mike Jin, Joanne Maliekel, Johnathan Mell, Nishi Muddasani, Amol Pai, Claire Schenkel, Taylor Seabaugh, Andy Stuhl and Jeremy Weltmer.
Three seniors were named semifinalists in the Achievement Scholarship competition, which recognizes African-American high school students: Nicole Carter, Dane Jones and Kasey Strawbridge.
Senior Elena Crosley was named a scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program sponsored by another organization, the College Board.
Although their names will not be released until next week, an additional 30 seniors will receive letters of commendation from the National Merit program.
