During assembly on Monday, November 17th, Tom Gardner, development director of EnergyCare, spoke to students about his organization. Following his presentation, student representatives from the Montgomery Plan presented a check for $1,030 to EnergyCare in honor of Dr. Shahan.
Gardner opened by saying that EnergyCare and JBS had had a long relationship in which Burroughs students help winterize the homes of elderly St. Louisans. Gardner explained that the mission of EnergyCare is to help low-income, elderly citizens cope with St. Louis’ weather extremes. Sister Pat Kelly started EnergyCare in 1983 to serve a population—namely low-income elderly—that falls through the cracks of the social service agencies. Gardner pointed out that as individuals age, their bodies are less able to regulate temperature and that certain medications make them even more vulnerable to temperature extremes. He said that EnergyCare helps these individuals by providing air conditioning units, help with utility bills and conservation services (such as installation of vinyl on windows). After 25 years, EnergyCare continues Sister Kelly’s vision to take care of others who cannot care for themselves. “We do it to preserve the individual’s dignity. We believe every person is a blessing. We need to value one another and look out for one another.” Gardner closed his presentation by thanking the Burroughs community for its support. |
